Introduction: It was 47 years ago today

ปี 1967 บนโต๊ะอาหารแห่งหนึ่งในอังกฤษ พอล แมคคาร์ทนีย์กำลังนั่งทานข้าวอยู่กับผู้ช่วยสารพัดประโยชน์-มาล อีแวนส์ มีขวดอยู่สองขวด ขนาดเล็กเหมาะมือ มีตัวอักษรเขียนไว้ว่า 'S' ขวดนึงและ 'P' ขวดนึง พอลถามมาลว่ามันหมายถึงอะไร มาลตอบ "ก็เกลือกะพริกไทยไง (salt and pepper)"

อ๋อ.... Saltand pepper...salt-and-pepper...sergeantpepper... ได้ไอเดียล่ะ

ขณะนั้นพอลกำลังคิดชื่ออัลบั้มใหม่ของพวกเขาอยู่ มันจะเป็นอัลบั้มที่ต่างออกไปจากทุกอัลบั้มของ Beatles เพราะมันจะไม่ใช่อัลบั้มของพวกเขา มันจะเป็นของอีกวงนึง ซึ่งเป็นตัวแทน (alter-ego) ของพวกสี่เต่าทอง และตอนนี้เขาคิดชื่อมันได้แล้ว มันจะเป็นวงดนตรีวงใหญ่ของจ่าคนหนึ่งที่มีชื่อว่า Pepper และเพื่อความเก๋มันต้องเป็นวงของ Lonely Hearts Club ด้วย เพื่อคนจะได้ฉงนฉงายว่าทำไมชมรมคนหัวใจหงอยนี้ถึงได้มีวงดนตรีประจำชมรมด้วย? (สมาชิกชมรมนี้น่าจะมี Eleanor Rigby และ Father McKenzie ด้วยนะ)

ที่เล่ามาข้างบนนั้นคือที่มาของชื่ออัลบั้มนี้ จากปากของพอลเอง ซึ่งจะจริงหรือเปล่าก็ไม่รู้ ยังมีอีกหลายทฤษฎีของชื่อนี้ ไว้วันหลังเล่าให้ฟัง นี่คือลองเพลย์ที่ดังที่สุดในโลก ดังในทุกมิติ ตั้งแต่หน้าปก-ดนตรี-การบันทึกเสียง-เนื้อเพลง--ยันหลังปก ไม่ได้เล่นโวหาร "หลังปก" ของอัลบั้มนี้ก็ยังเป็นตำนาน เพราะมันเป็นครั้งแรกที่มีการพิมพ์เนื้อเพลงครบทุกเพลงลงบนปกแผ่นเสียง ส่วนหน้าปกนั้นน่าจะเป็นหนึ่งในภาพที่คุ้นตามนุษยชาติที่สุดในรอบศตวรรษ ทั้งสวยงามและน่าหวาดหวั่นอยู่ในที

Sgt. Pepper's ยิ่งใหญ่แค่ไหน ต้องสร้างบรรยากาศให้อยู่ในยุคนั้นด้วยนะครับ และต้องไม่ลืมว่าทั้งหมดนี่พวกเขาบันทึกเสียงด้วยเทปแปดแทร็คเท่านั้น (ขณะที่ทุกวันนี้การบันทึกเสียงแบบดิจิทัล-ผมเข้าใจว่าไม่ต้องพูดกันแล้วว่ากี่แทร็ค) มันไม่ใช่อัลบั้มของสี่เต่าทองที่ผมรักที่สุด แต่เคยบอกให้เพื่อนๆฟังว่าถ้าเอาปืนมาจ่อหัวให้เอาไปติดเกาะฟังแค่แผ่นเดียว ผมก็คงเลือก Pepper ครับ เพราะมันคือ the Greatest และทุกครั้งที่ฟัง ผมจะได้ยิน หรือได้ความรู้สึกใหม่ๆจากมันเสมอ

ผมไม่ค่อยแคร์นักว่ามันจะเป็น concept album แท้ๆหรือคอนเซ็พท์กำมะลออย่างที่จอห์น เลนนอนด่าเอาไว้ (ไม่ต้องตื่นเต้นครับ เลนนอนชอบถล่มงานเก่าๆของตัวเองอยู่แล้ว) แต่จะว่าไป มันก็เป็นน่ะครับ ก็ concept ของมันคือ เค้าสมมติว่านี่เป็นการแสดงของวง Sgt. Pepper's...Band เปิดมาก็แนะนำตัว เล่าประวัติ อ้อนแฟนเพลงซะหน่อย แล้วก็เล่นต่อเนื่องไม่พูดไม่จา 10 เพลงรวด (รับประกันเพราะทุกเพลง) ก่อนที่จ่าจะมากล่าวอำลาในเพลง Sgt. Pepper's (reprise)

และ Beatles ตัวจริงก็ขึ้นมา encore ด้วยเพลง A Day In The Life ที่ผมคิดว่าเป็นเพลงที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดที่ Bealtes ทำมา

นักวิจารณ์บางท่านบอกว่าอัลบั้มนี้ไม่ได้เน้นฝีมือดนตรีเท่าไหร่ แต่หนักไปทางไอเดียและเทคนิคในการบันทึกเสียงมากกว่า ผมก็เห็นด้วยนะครับ ท่อนโซโล steam organ ใน Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! นั้นใครจะไปทราบมาก่อนว่าสร้างมาจากการตัดต่อเทปบันทึกเสียงเก่าๆแบบ random สุดๆ, การบันทึกเสียงวงเครื่องสาย 40 ชิ้นให้ฟังดูเป็น 160 ใน A Day In The Life, เสียงร้องแบบแสนจะไซคีดีลิคของจอห์นในหลายๆเพลง

แต่ด้านดนตรีมันก็ไม่ใช่จะไม่มีอะไร ฝีมือเบสของพอลเด่นมากๆในอัลบั้มนี้ (ลองฟัง With A Little Help From My Friends) ริงโก้ร่ายกลองได้สุดจะ cool ใน A Day In The Life, จอร์จ สร้างเพลงแขกที่ดีที่สุดของเขาในเพลงแรกหน้าบี 'Within You Without You' (สำหรับผู้ที่ไม่คุ้นเคย เพลงนี้จะสร้างความรำคาญและอึดอัดให้ท่านเป็นที่สุด แต่เมื่อคุณผ่านช่วงเวลานั้นมาได้-ซึ่งอาจจะมากกว่า 10ปี- นี่คือหนึ่งในเพลงสำคัญที่สุดของ Pepper ทีเดียวล่ะครับ)

ก็คงจะต้องยอมรับว่าจอห์น เลนนอน ถูกพอลกลบรัศมีไปเยอะใน Pepper (too busy about medicine) ยังดีที่ยังมี A Day In The Life มากู้หน้า เสียงร้องของเขาในท่อนเวิร์สนั้นมันช่าง Dreamy และ Druggy เหลือเกิน....

แต่ถ้าคุณชอบ Beatles เพราะเพลงซึ้งๆอย่าง Yesterday, In My Life, Michelle, Let It Be หรือเพลงสนุกๆอย่าง She Loves You, A Hard Day's Night ก็อาจจะต้องเตรียมตัวพอสมควรนะ ถ้าจะฟังอัลบั้มนี้เป็นครั้งแรก

หลายครั้งที่ผมพยายามโปรโมตมันให้เพื่อนๆ(ที่ไม่ใช่คนบ้าเพลงเต็มขั้นอย่างเราๆ)ฟัง ผลก็คือการรีบนำมาคืนพร้อมยิ้มแห้งๆทุกทีไป

มีอีกอย่างที่น่าสนใจคือเรื่องเนื้อหา เลนนอน-แมคคาร์ทนีย์ในยุคกลางซิกซ์ตี้ส์นี้ผ่านพ้นการแต่งเพลงรักๆมาแล้วในแทบทุกกระบวนท่า จะเห็นได้ว่าใน Pepper นี้พวกเขาหลุดพ้นจากการแต่งเนื้อแบบธรรมดาๆซ้ำซากไปโดยสิ้นเชิง ทุกเพลงมีฉากที่ไม่เคยเห็น มีมุมมองที่ไม่เคยมีใครมอง และไม่ว่าพวกเขาจะจงใจหรือไม่ มันเต็มไปด้วยความหมายซ่อนเร้นที่พวกนักตีความถูกใจกันยิ่งนัก.....
